Penelope's Path... Robert and Penelope's Epilogue
Quickly, you and Robert become a part of each others lives. You two have dinner most every night, his place, your place, or out at a restaurant. You love that despite Robert’s obvious wealth, he’s not a braggart, nor is he a snob. He still makes his college hot plate special: Grilled Peanut Butter and Jelly with the Potato Chip Center. You finally give it a try, and decide it’s not so bad after all.
“Three! Two!! ONE!!! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!” everyone exclaims.
Robert sweeps you into his arms and plants the most salacious kiss on your mouth. You don’t mind. Your friends have seen Robert and you kiss before. You and Robert have been together for eight months already. Besides, Shannon is kissing Nate, and Rebecca is kissing Channing.
When Robert breaks the breathtaking kiss, suddenly he’s down on one knee before you. He’s looking up at you with his twinkling blue eyes, has one of your hands in his and in his other hand he’s holding a small black velvet box.
Your free hand flies to your mouth and you stop breathing. Your heart is pounding wildly in your heart. You don’t know if you’ve lost your hearing—or if everyone has stopped whatever they were doing in light of what Robert appeared to be doing. Given that you still hear the traditional Auld Lang Syne song crooning, you assuming your friends are watching—just silent.
Now that he has your full attention, Robert lets go of your hand for only a second to open the black velvet box which is black velvet and satin inside with the words TIFFANY & CO. Imprinted in silver on the lid. In the plush pillow is a unbelievable ring. A large sparkling diamond perched in the center in an intricate setting surrounded by pavé diamonds in a swirled pattern, and also gracing the band, all set in platinum.
You pull your eyes from the glittering jewel when you hear Robert start to speak and find his eyes twinkling more than the ring.
“Should old acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind?” he asks, quoting the first line of the song still playing in the background. “I should hope not. Pippa, you’ve never left my mind. I can’t express how thrilled I was that we crossed paths eight months ago. Every day since has been better than the last. I promise to always care for you, and love you, and never give you reason for heartache. I hope you’ll move into the next year with me with a promise to be my friend, my partner, and my wife. Penelope Ingrid Pierce, will you marry me?”
Tears are streaming down your face and you feel warm and tingly all over. You’re so choked up, but you manage to croak out a “Yes!” then nod your head fiercely.
Robert pops up to his feet, scoops you into his arms and swirls you round and round while kissing you over and over again. Your friends are applauding wildly and making all sorts of noise. You spot Shannon jumping up and down on her toes—well, as much as she can being that she’s already two days past due and sooooo ready to evict the tiny human growing inside of her. Now she’s rolling the dice for a New Year’s baby. Rebecca is even beaming with a doe eyed look as she looks on, even letting Channing hold her protectively and lovingly.
When Robert sets you down, he pulls the ring from the box and slips it onto your ring finger. You never imagined… well, a lot of things. But most of all reuniting with Robert, falling in love, and most of all being able to trust another man with your heart the way you trust Robert.
